I started collecting US sheet music years ago, even though I am not a musician. They’re fun to collect and easy to store. Furthermore, you can find interesting information, and oddities in them.
The one ‘I Forgot to Remember to Forget’ is the only US version I’ve seen that indicates Elvis being on Sun Records. All others indicate Elvis as an RCA artist.
The one for ‘When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again’ has an additional verse that Elvis did not use.
The sheet music for ‘Tonight Is So Right for Love’ is the US version. Although it has a stamp from the record store of Chicoutimi, Quebec, it is the US version. Now as we all know there was the original version sung in the movie, and an alternate version ‘Tonight’s All Right for Love’ that was used for the European market.
The weird thing about this sheet music is that the title is correct, but when you open it, the lyrics are for the alternate version! Now why would a US version, released in 1960 have the alternate version used only in Europe? Now imagine being in 1960 and getting the LP. You buy the sheet music but when you open it, it doesn’t match the song on the LP! Strange.
Did you know that there was an extra 3rd verse for the song ‘Rock-A-Hula Baby’? Neither did I until I got the sheet music.
There are several versions of ‘Good Luck Charm’, but this one has a mistake on the cover. Can you spot it? They misspelled ‘Presley’!
As you know, Elvis rarely wrote songs. He was given co-writer credits on his early hits from the 50s (Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook Up), but he did not write these songs. For this one, he is credited as co-writer with Red West, who wrote many songs for Elvis. As the story goes, Elvis came up with the title and Red was inspired to write the song and gave co-credit to Elvis.
We all know that the song ‘Kissing Cousins (number 2)’ was edited to barely over a minute in length. The unedited master was only recently released on FTD. Well, the sheet music released in 1964 has the complete lyrics. So imagine buying the album, and the sheet music, and noticing that the song on the album doesn’t match the sheet music.
Finally, for the song ‘Only Believe’ Elvis is strangely credited as co-writer.
Best wishes, Jules Thibault
